Tracing the history of NVIDIA reveals how we should live in the world ahead!?
NVIDIA, which once held the top spot in global market capitalization and is at the center of discussions about AI, is a company whose name IT professionals hear almost daily. When researching through news, books, and other sources, I find that there is a wealth of information to gain about Jensen Huang, the CEO, and NVIDIA. Many writings by business leaders from the U.S. and Japan are fascinating, and they provide a clear understanding of where the future is heading and how we should navigate it. I would like to share some of these insights. NVIDIA\'s Website During my time in SoftBank’s distribution division, I was involved in selling NVIDIA\'s graphics boards to retail stores and system integrators. However, looking back, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I only viewed NVIDIA as a third-party manufacturer of graphics processing boards for gamers, similar to Japanese companies like Melco, Elecom, and Sanwa Supply. Jensen Huang, the CEO, is a second-generation immigrant from Taiwan. However, since he was born in Taiwan and moved to the U.S. before his parents, he could be considered a first-generation immigrant. He graduated from MIT and joined a general-purpose computer board manufacturer. Although he only completed an undergraduate degree, he was exceptionally talented. His abilities were highly regarded within the company, and within just a few years, he was promoted to head of development. Around that time, he advocated for the company to enter the emerging PC market, but his proposal was rejected by upper management. Frustrated by his company\'s reluctance to embrace what he saw as an inevitable PC era, he left the company in 1993 and co-founded NVIDIA with his colleagues to take on the PC market themselves. In the early days, the company frequently faced bankruptcy risks, but it eventually gained stability and went public in 1999. However, running a graphics board manufacturing business was highly unstable. If a giant like Intel decided to integrate graphics processing capabilities into its CPUs, NVIDIA’s sales could vanish overnight. The company continued to operate under this looming threat. Then, a turning point came. After NVIDIA added programming capabilities to its graphics boards, the company’s growth accelerated. Scientists from various fields—medicine, architecture, mathematics, and big data analysis—began using NVIDIA’s boards for computing tasks beyond graphics processing. One of the most significant breakthroughs was the use of NVIDIA’s GPUs in deep learning, propelling the company into the AI semiconductor space. Around 2010, NVIDIA’s CUDA platform, which combines GPUs with programming capabilities, started being widely adopted by scientists and developers worldwide. Jensen himself actively promoted its adoption through conferences and academic lectures. As a result, a vast number of users embraced the platform, creating a network effect that established a formidable entry barrier. Even tech giants like Intel and AMD now struggle to catch up, and it seems inevitable that they will eventually be overtaken. At this point, it is worth considering the platform business model itself. Some view it as an outdated concept, but in reality, the most successful companies today are all platform-based: Amazon’s e-commerce and AWS, Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, Apple’s App Store, Google’s Android, Tesla’s battery network, Microsoft’s Windows and GitHub—all of these are platforms. These companies dominate the top 10 global market capitalization rankings, proving that platforms remain the most powerful business model. Another rising player, China\'s DeepSeek, is also a platform company for AI researchers and businesses. Its core infrastructure consists of 2,048 affordable NVIDIA boards. Among the top market capitalization companies, NVIDIA’s position represents the acceleration of technological evolution and the realization of AI-driven singularity, projected to arrive by 2029. NVIDIA has secured the foundation of a platform that will redefine human progress—an extraordinary achievement. Although on a smaller scale, our companies, Skijan and GogoJungle, are also platforms. However, we aspire to create platforms of even greater significance to humanity and are constantly searching for opportunities to do so. The reasons NVIDIA was able to secure the AI platform position—one that even other tech giants coveted—are extensively analyzed in books about the company. A recurring theme is the relentless work ethic of Jensen Huang, who is said to work from 9 AM to 11 PM, including weekends. His employees follow a similar work style and are all highly educated and exceptionally talented. Of course, hard work alone does not guarantee platform dominance, but it is undeniable that NVIDIA\'s success was built on continuous effort and determination. Now, let’s consider Japanese companies, none of which remain in the top 50 of global market capitalization rankings. In contrast, most of the top 10 U.S. companies were founded within the past 30 years, with the oldest—Microsoft and Apple—being around 40 years old. Meanwhile, Japan’s stock market is dominated by old-economy firms. As you know, the Japanese electronics industry has fallen behind South Korean and Chinese competitors, leading to acquisitions or significant downsizing. The only exception is Sony, whose manufacturing sector now accounts for just 25% of its revenue—Sony is effectively an entertainment company focused on gaming, film, and music. Now, with reports of Nissan being targeted for acquisition, it is highly likely that Japan’s automotive industry will follow the same trajectory as its electronics sector. If the automotive industry—which employs nearly 10% of Japan’s workforce (5.58 million people)—declines, it will inevitably cause severe disruptions to infrastructure and a catastrophic decline in national strength. While I am not in a position to discuss national policy, as a business operator in Japan, I believe the key to survival lies in developing unique platforms in emerging fields such as space exploration, nanotechnology, and biotechnology, as well as IT-driven entertainment. These businesses should start by expanding within Asia and then gradually extend to the global market, much like how major U.S. tech companies have done. This is because, barring geopolitical conflicts, advancements in AI and nanotechnology will continue to drive down the cost of goods and food. Consequently, the main destinations for consumer spending and investment will likely be in the fields mentioned above. A U.S. corporate executive who has spent many years in Japan once remarked that Japanese companies must expand more aggressively into Asia. I believe they should also, over time, extend their reach globally, following the example set by major American tech firms. For students, I recommend considering companies that are building and operating promising platforms in space technology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and IT-driven entertainment. These fields are still in their early stages but have immense potential. By doing so, they can secure strong financial rewards in the future while engaging in uniquely creative and fulfilling work. What do you think? (Author: Shinobu Hayakawa)

[AI Real-time Interpretation] "Skijan" has released a simultaneous interpretation feature for video calls
At GogoJungle, we are focusing on development to release AI-related services faster than any other IT company. On November 15, 2024, we launched a feature that allows AI to provide real-time interpretation during video calls. The content spoken by the user is automatically translated into the specified language and delivered to the listener through both text and voice. In addition to the existing text-based chat translation features in Japanese, English, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese, we are now applying real-time interpretation services to calls as well. This will further promote the global flow of skills, contributing to the improvement of profits for sellers in Japan and other countries, and enhancing the convenience for skill buyers.
